Xinmao Metal completed a custom stainless steel renovation package for Kingdom Centre Mall in Riyadh, including six multi-tier viewing platforms, PVD titanium-gold curved metalwork, column cladding, portal details and handrail edging. This case study explains how complex geometry, factory pre-assembly and a controlled installation sequence supported a smooth delivery.

For this mall refurbishment, Xinmao Metal fabricated six new multi-tier viewing platforms and a series of PVD titanium-gold stainless steel details for public areas. The work combined large double-curved forms with column cladding, portal elements, handrail edging, and decorative metalwork across the mall.

A renewal programme with a demanding brief

Kingdom Centre Mall is a high-traffic commercial environment where the architectural finish has to work at several scales. It needs to read from across a large atrium, sit comfortably beside retail frontages and lighting, and still feel resolved when a visitor is standing at a railing or passing an entrance column. The client’s renovation brief centred on six new viewing platforms, then extended into the stainless steel components that connect the public spaces: entrance columns, handrail borders, decorative trims, portal cladding and related architectural details.

The project value was approximately USD 1 million. That number matters less here as a sales point than as an indication of coordination: this was not a single feature piece. It was a package of visible elements that had to share one colour, one geometry language and one installation logic while fitting into an operating commercial setting.

The chosen finish was PVD titanium gold. It was used to give the curved stainless steel a controlled golden tone rather than a mirror-like spectacle. In the visualisations, the gold bands pick up the warm lighting and trace the edges of the platforms. The same colour family continues through columns, portal elements and handrail details, so the renovation reads as a connected intervention rather than a collection of unrelated replacements.

Six viewing platforms, not six standard units

The signature pieces were the six ring-shaped viewing platforms. Each group uses a layered, three-tier composition of curved bands and supporting structure. Their profiles are not simple circles cut from flat sheet. The geometry moves through space, which means the frame, cladding, joint locations and installation sequence all have to be decided together. A small deviation in one curved component can become much more visible once the lines repeat across several levels.

That is why the engineering work began with the geometry rather than the finish. Drawings and three-dimensional models were used to clarify the oval plans, support points and the relationship between the outer skin and the structural frame. The engineering images below belong in the article because they show the part of a renovation that a finished photograph cannot: the work of turning a fluid architectural outline into components that can be fabricated, checked, transported and assembled in the right order.

Complex curvature changes the manufacturing conversation

Curved stainless steel is often discussed as if bending were the only difficult operation. On a project like this, the more difficult question is how the visible surface, its backing structure and its joints behave after they become a complete assembly. The platform forms required complex double-curved fabrication. The team had to control the shape of each segment while preserving a continuous reading across the finished rings.

The renovation also included column wrapping and portal cladding. These areas introduced a different type of complexity: existing architectural conditions, vertical surfaces, transitions to ceilings and the need to keep the metal surface visually calm. The proposal used curved stainless steel honeycomb panels over structural framing for selected cladding conditions. This approach supports a clean architectural skin while accommodating the required build-up behind it.

The PVD titanium-gold finish added another coordination requirement. Gold is unforgiving when adjacent segments do not align visually. Joint placement, edge treatment and the direction of the finished surface all needed consideration before installation. The goal was not to hide every technical connection at any cost; it was to put the connections where they would support a disciplined reading of the architecture.

At the platform edges, light becomes part of that reading. The curved bands sit alongside integrated illumination and the surrounding white architecture, so their proportion had to be judged in context rather than as isolated metal samples. A surface can look correct on a bench and feel too heavy once it has been repeated around a large open void. Reviewing the geometry, the finish and the lighting relationship together helped keep the gold tone present without allowing it to dominate the wider renovation.

One month of fabrication, then a deliberate test before shipping

The manufacturing period was approximately one month. With complex architectural metalwork, a short production window only works when installation questions are resolved early enough to be tested in the factory. For this project, the assemblies were pre-installed in the workshop before shipment. That step allowed the team to verify the relationships between curved stainless steel segments, support structure and connection points before the work reached Saudi Arabia.

Pre-assembly is particularly valuable for renovation work. Existing buildings bring constraints that are difficult to understand from a single drawing alone: access routes, ceiling interfaces, site tolerances and the practical order in which parts can be lifted and fixed. Testing the assemblies beforehand reduces the number of unknowns arriving on site. It also gives installers a clearer sequence and a reference for checking parts as they are unpacked.

For projects with repeated curved assemblies, the visual result depends on the installation sequence as much as the fabrication. A factory pre-assembly turns that sequence into something the project team can examine before export.

The available site photographs show the installation stage, including the protective film still on some curved panels. This is useful evidence of the process rather than material for a glossy before-and-after claim. You can see the layered ring components in position, the cladding ready to be completed, and the relationship between the new work and the mall’s existing levels.

Installation that followed the preparation

Once the components arrived on site, the installation progressed smoothly because the major interfaces had already been rehearsed at the factory. The layered platforms, curved cladding and gold-toned details could be assembled with a known sequence instead of being improvised around the geometry. This is the quiet part of a successful renovation. Visitors see the final lines, lighting and colour. The project team sees a set of parts that meet as intended.

The project also demonstrates why stainless steel remains useful in commercial refurbishment. It can be shaped into strong visual gestures, but it can also work as a precise finishing material around existing structures. In this mall, the same material family moves from large sculptural platform rings to column skins, portal elements and handrail borders. The scale changes; the fabrication discipline does not.

What this case means for future mall renovations

There is a practical lesson in the Kingdom Centre Mall package. Large commercial renovations rarely ask for a single off-the-shelf product. They ask for a system: a finish that suits the design language, fabrication that can follow complex geometry, and a route from workshop to site that does not leave the difficult decisions until the last week.

For architects, contractors and project owners planning similar work, the starting information is straightforward: drawings or dimensions, the installation location, the target finish, quantities and the required programme. From there, a custom stainless steel package can be developed around the actual interfaces of the building. Complex curves, PVD colour and panelised cladding all become more manageable when they are treated as engineering decisions from the beginning.
