The Material Between: How Metal Connects Wood, Stone and Glass

Across public buildings, offices, residences and mixed-use developments, metal is doing more than adding a finished surface. It is becoming the material between: an aluminum brise-soleil mediates light and the envelope, an aluminum lattice holds privacy without closing a room, expanded mesh carries an industrial note into timber, and stainless steel sharpens the relationship between concrete, brick and wood. This Design Insight studies how architects use metal at these junctions and translates the examples into practical guidance for material selection, reflectance, open area, panel scale, support, movement, joints, drainage, installation and maintenance. It is written for architects, interior designers, developers, contractors, fit-out teams and hospitality clients who need a mixed material palette to remain coherent from concept through delivery.

Metal is often specified as the final layer: the shine on a wall, the frame around glass, the screen in front of the sun. A closer reading of projects from Barcelona to Tokyo suggests a more useful role. Metal can act as the material between, giving a mixed palette a clear order.

That role may be environmental, as at Hospital del Mar, spatial, as in the lattice at CMM (H)Office, or tactile, as in Lecomte Apartment. Together, they point to a more deliberate approach to metal material combinations in architecture, where distance, shadow, edge, touch and consistency matter as much as the finish.

01 / a common edge

A metal layer can make a mixed palette feel intentional

Hospital del Mar Phase 2 Expansion, Barcelona · POST Rotterdam Tower · RDH House, Bratislava

At Hospital del Mar Phase 2 Expansion, Brullet-De Luna Arquitectes and PINEARQ use aluminum brise-soleils separated from the building envelope. Their orientation changes with the facade, creating a thermal buffer and maintenance route while filtering rooms, daylight and the seafront. The key move is the interval: aluminum gives glazing, structure and landscape a legible edge without imitating the building behind it.

That interval is where much of the performance is decided. Offset from glazing, support depth, blade spacing and corner turns affect shadow, reflection and access. A screen that looks delicate in elevation can feel dense from the approach, while a shallow blade can produce glare rather than shade.

POST Rotterdam makes a different connection. ODA’s new tower rises behind the historic Postkantoor, combining an arched facade language with brick and a unitized aluminum curtain wall. Its scale, rhythm and public courtyard tie new construction to historic masonry without asking the tower to disappear.

At RDH House in Bratislava, untreated raw aluminum wraps the solid facade beside a glazed living volume and open steel stair. Its corrugated surface catches the landscape. Because it is restrained rather than highly polished, reflection remains atmospheric instead of spectacular.

02 / permeability and privacy

Open area is part of the material language

National Archives of Sweden, Härnösand · CMM (H)Office, Jakarta

The National Archives of Sweden brings a concrete archive volume and a timber administration building together through a light-filled atrium. Its source description notes expanded metal mesh detailing beside timber, acoustic surfaces and strict environmental requirements. The mesh occupies a useful middle condition: more defined than glass, more open than a solid wall, and able to carry an industrial note into a warm wood setting.

CMM (H)Office makes permeability explicit. Its L-shaped aluminum lattice filters views, daylight and privacy around a hybrid office, warehouse and penthouse. Inside, lattice screens meeting rooms without sealing them, while a central void separates visual and acoustic activity. Depth and spacing keep overlapping programmes connected.

For commercial interiors and hospitality projects, open area is therefore more than appearance. A dense pattern can support privacy but darken a corridor; a fine mesh may preserve light but need a darker backing to read clearly. Test the background, lighting and viewing distance with the actual finish.

The smallest metal moves can warm a hard palette

Shin Nakano Residence, Tokyo · Lecomte Apartment, Le Havre · Casa PR21, Badalona

Shin Nakano Residence treats stainless steel as part of a geometric relief rather than generic cladding. Ryuichi Sasaki Architecture combines purpose-made formwork, stainless steel and cast concrete on the street facade. Matte metal, window reflections and concrete grain shift as daylight moves across the trapezoidal pattern, which continues through entrance columns, tile and grated stair treads.

Lecomte Apartment takes the opposite approach. Atelier Orzan preserves parquet, mouldings, a chimney breast, brick vaults and steel beams, then inserts olive-green Valchromat, okoumé plywood and bespoke joinery. Stainless steel and chrome appear as controlled kitchen and furniture accents, sharpening historic details without flattening the room into a polished interior.

Casa PR21 places stainless steel at the working heart of a warm palette. Its kitchen combines timber and stainless steel inside a house organized by concrete frames, load-bearing brick and a timber gate. The point is not equal visual weight: stainless steel can stay at a surface that needs precision and durability while wood, brick and daylight carry the atmosphere.

The resulting hierarchy is useful: use metal broadly when it has an environmental or structural task; use it selectively when its value is tactile, reflective or related to a high-contact interface. In both cases, design the transition instead of leaving it to the installer.

Specify the relationship, then choose the expression

Give the metal a job

Shade, filter, separate, reflect, protect, guide or carry. A finish becomes more convincing when its visual rhythm follows a real responsibility.

Design the edge as carefully as the field

Returns, shadow gaps, corner folds and the line against glass or stone often determine whether a mixed palette feels composed.

Review reflection at the actual approach

Brushed, matte, mirror, anodized and PVD surfaces respond differently to daylight, artificial light, fingerprints and adjacent colour.

Use open area as a design parameter

Perforation and lattice spacing influence privacy, airflow, glare, shadow density and how much of the background remains visible.

Separate appearance from support

Confirm the subframe, movement allowance, drainage and access before finalizing the pattern. A light visual layer still needs a clear load path.

Design for the second visit

Cleaning methods, replaceable modules, spare panels and inspection access protect the material conversation after opening day.

Architectural Metal Perspective

From a fabrication and delivery standpoint, a mixed-material concept should be translated into a junction schedule early. Record what the metal touches, where moisture can collect, how the finish will be cleaned and which parts must remain removable. Exterior grade and finish should be checked against chloride, humidity, pollution, orientation and the project’s cleaning regime; a marine-grade option such as 316L may be considered in a demanding environment, but it is not an automatic specification. Indoor projects often need equal attention to hand contact, lighting and service access.

For screens and lattices, free area, panel size, return depth and support spacing are related decisions. The same pattern can look airy in a small sample and heavy when repeated across a full wall. A full-size mock-up should be used to review shadow density, reflectance, grain direction, colour consistency and the background behind the metal. If the metal meets timber, stone, brick or concrete, confirm movement, ventilation, drainage and separation of dissimilar metals before the visible joint is finalized.

  • Coordinate folded returns, welded corners, concealed fixings and access panels with the architect, engineer and fit-out contractor.
  • Keep the finish consistent across sheets, trims and replacement parts; small differences are amplified beside uniform stone, glass or timber.
  • For ceilings and wall systems, align removable zones with lighting, air distribution, inspection points and the installation sequence.
  • Agree a realistic cleaning and maintenance method before selecting a highly reflective or textured surface.

Where a project needs a patterned external layer to coordinate privacy, shade and identity, exterior decorative stainless steel screen panels provide a useful system reference. For an interior wall or circulation surface where a restrained reflective field must meet other finishes, architectural silver stainless steel wall cladding panels show how panel rhythm and surface character can be considered together.

Questions worth resolving before specification

How do you combine metal with wood in an interior?

Start with the intended contrast and points of touch. Review grain direction, shadow gaps, moisture exposure, edge protection, cleaning and a full-size sample under project lighting. Metal can stay at a work surface or frame; it does not need to cover the whole room.

What should be checked when metal meets stone, brick or concrete?

Confirm movement, support, drainage, back ventilation, the treatment of returns and the separation of dissimilar metals. The visible joint should be coordinated with the substrate and installation sequence, not added after the panel layout is complete.

Are perforated metal screens only decorative?

No. Their open area, depth and spacing can also influence privacy, shade, airflow, glare and maintenance access. Those outcomes still need to be tested and documented for the specific project.
