Custom stainless steel elevator surrounds, wall cladding, ceiling trims and niches developed as an integrated package for a high-end residential interior in Beijing.
High-end residential interiors are often judged by their transitions rather than their largest room. A lift door should sit neatly within the surrounding stone. A ceiling line needs to meet a wall without an improvised strip at the corner. A recessed niche should feel built into the architecture, not inserted afterwards. These details are small in area, yet they have a disproportionate effect on how a private residence feels when people move through the entrance lobby, corridor and elevator hall.
This Beijing project focused on those close-viewing moments. Xinmao Metal provided custom stainless steel elevator surrounds, wall cladding, ceiling components and stainless steel niches, followed through with installation service. Each component was made for its own location and adjacent materials. The work had to fit within a residential interior of stone, timber, painted surfaces and concealed building services, while retaining a consistent level of edge quality from one zone to the next.
The project is a good example of why custom interior metalwork is rarely a single product. The elevator portal, the ceiling trim and the textured wall panel all have different forms, but they are read together. Their scale, shadow gaps and contact lines need a shared discipline. When that happens, metal does not feel added to the residence. It becomes part of the interior’s structure and visual order.
Elevator portals need an architectural, not a catalogue, fit
The elevator opening is one of the most demanding areas in an apartment lobby or private residential corridor. It is narrow, surrounded by finished surfaces and full of interfaces: the door frame, call button, transom, wall cladding, floor finish and ceiling. Every one of these elements can reveal an uneven joint. A factory-made standard surround may not follow the actual site dimensions or the intended stone pattern. This project required a custom approach so the stainless steel components could relate to the completed interior instead of fighting against it.
The installation images show the stages clearly. Protective film remains in place while panels are set, and the opening is still being coordinated with its neighbouring finishes. That stage is important. The surrounding pieces need to establish a clean, even perimeter before the final protective materials are removed. The apparent simplicity of a finished elevator surround comes from these early decisions about panel depth, return edges and the position of the transom.
Several door openings use vertical ribbed or corrugated stainless steel panels above and beside the lift. The texture gives the portal a stronger vertical direction and reduces the visual flatness of a broad metal plane. It also helps the opening sit between heavier stone surfaces without turning the elevator hall into a field of competing reflections.
Textured wall cladding gives the elevator hall another scale
The project also includes textured stainless steel wall cladding. This is not treated as a broad, plain mirror surface. The pattern breaks up the reflection and gives the wall a more tactile, layered appearance. In a residential setting, that is useful because a feature wall is often seen at short range, from a hallway or waiting position near the lift. A textured surface can carry a visual identity without producing the hard, continuous reflection of a fully polished sheet.
The cladding shown in the images is installed as a planned field around a central opening and adjacent stone panels. The panel layout matters as much as the texture. A wall surface needs a clear outer boundary, reliable verticals and an intentional relationship to the ceiling line. Narrow pieces at the edge of a feature wall can look accidental; a proportioned panel grid makes the metal feel integral to the joinery and architectural finishes around it.
Corrugated stainless steel wall panels serve a different purpose. Their repeated vertical relief makes the wall feel taller and provides shadow without needing a strong colour contrast. On an elevator portal, this is a practical way to distinguish the opening while preserving a restrained material palette. The metal remains part of the interior’s neutral finish family, but its surface profile gives it a recognisable role.
Ceiling trim and niches complete the visible edges
Stainless steel ceilings do not need to cover an entire room to be useful. In this project, ceiling components and edge trims are used where the ceiling meets wall cladding, recessed lighting and the elevator zone. A narrow, accurate metal edge can finish a transition that would otherwise rely on sealant, paint or an overly heavy moulding. It gives the ceiling a crisp line while allowing the other materials to keep their own character.
The ceiling installation image shows this at a typical room edge. The trim is being fitted between the ceiling plane and the wall assembly, with lighting cut-outs and service coordination still visible. Its final value is not decorative excess. It is the ability to hold a straight, clean line through the intersection of several finishes. In a luxury residence, these are the lines that remain visible long after the construction sequence is forgotten.
Custom stainless steel niches work in the same way. A niche must have stable returns, clean internal corners and a face that sits correctly with the wall finish. It may hold lighting, display objects or simply create depth in a corridor. Either way, its metal edges receive close scrutiny because people see them from a short distance. Custom fabrication makes it possible to keep the reveal size and finish relationship consistent with the surrounding elevator portals and wall panels.
From custom manufacture to on-site installation
Xinmao Metal’s role covered the project from custom manufacture through installation. That continuity is particularly useful for an interior with several connected metal types. The same team can keep track of the visible face, the fold and return geometry, the protective handling requirements and the adjacent stone or timber conditions. It also avoids a common gap in high-end residential work, where a component has been fabricated correctly in isolation but does not quite resolve at the final wall line.
Installation needs room for the realities of the site. Wall finishes can have small deviations, existing services need to remain accessible, and lift-door zones have fixed functional constraints. The answer is not to make the metal look improvised. It is to plan the panel sequence and fixing strategy so those conditions are absorbed behind the visible face. The completed detail should still read as a clean, measured frame.
The work at this Beijing residence was therefore a series of controlled interfaces rather than one repeated component. Elevator surrounds set the vertical rhythm. Textured and corrugated panels add surface depth. Ceiling trims establish the upper boundary. Niches bring the same precision into smaller recesses. The components are different in scale, but they use stainless steel to produce a consistent set of architectural edges throughout the residential interior.
What this residential package demonstrates
High-end residential metalwork does not need to call attention to every component. Its job is often to make the interior feel resolved. The Beijing project uses custom stainless steel where a straight edge, a textured plane or a durable surround can improve a necessary part of the building. That includes lift doors, feature walls, ceilings and recessed niches. The materials stay restrained, but the detailing is specific to each setting.
For designers, contractors and owners planning a comparable residential interior, the practical starting point is the junction. Consider the door opening, the wall surface, the ceiling edge and the adjacent material together. Once that relationship is fixed, the individual stainless steel panel, trim or niche can be designed with a clear reason for its size and position.
